Direct Support Professional
Being a DSP means having career with a purpose. DSPs provide daily assistance and companionship to individuals with mental illness and disabilities as they work towards achieving their goals and increasing their independence.
Qualifications
- You have the dedication to provide culturally competent services to uphold each individual’s needs, preferences, and interests
- Reliably commute to worksite or planning to relocate before starting work (Required). Primary locations include: Mankato/North Mankato/St. Peter/Kasota, MN
- Be able to transport clients in a company owned vehicle for community outings and appointments as deemed necessary
- Either have a valid driver’s license, AND active car insurance, a reliable vehicle and/or have reliable transportation to work
- High school or equivalent (Required)
Responsibilities
- Employees should expect to work minimally with 1 individual at a specific location
- Provides direct care to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Assist individuals with activities of daily living care for themself including: bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (getting in and out of bed or chair), eating, and continence AS NECESSARY
- Assist individuals with Instrumental Activities of Daily living including: Meal planning/preparation, shopping, using the telephone, housekeeping, money management, and taking medications, AS NECESSARY
- Assist in planning meaningful activities in the community or at home based on the individuals preferences, interests, and passions
- DSP will work with someone to enable them to do things independently
Other duties as assigned
- Support individuals to achieve personal outcomes that characterize a high quality of life, in accordance with program specific requirements
- Engage in respectful communication and uphold company values.
- Caregivers must model conflict resolution skills to help resolve conflicts
- Support individuals to have optimal health and well-being
- Provide safeguards and appropriately support challenging situations (e.g. crisis management)
